The Gentry Espresso & Wine Bar
Tucked away just south of historic downtown Cochrane you’ll find The Gentry Espresso & Wine Bar, a cozy coffee lovers paradise.
On any given day you’ll see a mixed crowd in the shop: parents with their small children, seniors, local business owners, and coffee geeks chatting with the barista. Cafe patrons sit at rustic tables and on couches sipping lattes and nibbling on house made muffins. On most days, you’ll find owner Tracy making espresso’s and chatting with regulars – one of her favourite parts of owning the business. She purchased The Gentry in 2017, and with both her children working at the cafe, it’s a real family affair.
Locals know The Gentry as a coffee destination. Coffee is scientific business, a good cup requires thoughtfully sourced freshbeans, just the right grind size and water with a quadruple filtration system. Careful attention is paid to both the heat of the water and the heat of the beans (you can’t let them cool down after they’ve been ground!). The barista’s here undergo extensive training to pull the perfect shot. Tracy will tell you that each barista has their own signature style, starting their shift with espresso machine tweaks and adjustments to produce their very best espresso, americano or latte. If you stop into the cafe on Friday’s you’ll get to participate in the weekly espresso tasting featuring unique coffees from a variety of local coffee roasters.
Once you are properly caffeinated, have a look at the well curated menu of house made goods and locally sourced products. Be sure to try the ‘stuffin muffins’ made with butter pastry, stuffed with eggs, cheese, ham, and “q-spice’ (a locally developed spice mixture). If it’s lunch you’re craving, the chicken brie panini is a favourite – featuring The Gentry’s house made mixed berry preserve and garlic aioli. A sweet tooth is satisfied with the popular gluten free carrot cake muffin, or a macaron Tracy sources from Calgary’s french bakery Ollia Macarons.
Featuring local Music, art & authors
The Gentry isn’t just a daytime destination either. Tracy loves to support local artists, authors & musicians. Check their calendar of events for intimate monthly house concerts, art openings and in the future – book readings. In the evenings The Gentry has a wine list, Alberta craft beer, and tapas menu featuring flatbreads – Apple maple bacon flatbread, yes please! – charcuterie boards and gourmet popcorn.
The Gentry is a coffee house that encourages social connection and interaction. People come in for many reasons and end up staying to relax and enjoy the atmosphere.
